Printable Storyboard Template PDF Guide

A storyboard template PDF is the safest format when you want to print, annotate, or hand a planning sheet to someone who doesn't use your software. The Story2Board template hub is the main place to compare and download the files; this guide explains which printable PDF to choose and how to prepare it for review.

We made four printable PDFs for different storyboard jobs, and each one is based on Story2Board's real shot fields instead of a blank grid with a few labels.

Why PDF works for storyboard templates

PDF keeps the page size stable. That matters more than people think. A printable storyboard should not reflow because someone opened it on another computer. The panel boxes, margins, note rows, and page header should stay exactly where they are.

The downloadable sheets keep the fields that a Story2Board shot can later store: scene number, location, action, narrative purpose, characters, props, shot size, angle, camera movement, equipment, focal length, lighting, duration, transition, emotional tone, dialogue, sound design, notes, and references. That makes the PDF useful before AI generation and still compatible with an editable board afterward.

Use PDF when:

  • you need A4 printouts;
  • a teacher or producer wants a worksheet;
  • the director marks up panels by hand;
  • the storyboard goes into a production binder;
  • you need one file that opens consistently everywhere.

Use Story2Board when the page needs to become a living board with generated frames and revisions.

Which storyboard PDF should you download?

Pick based on the density of the scene.

ProjectRecommended PDFWhy
One visual beat4-panelenough room for action, camera, sound, and references
Standard dialogue scenedialogue templatespeaker, listener, eyeline, axis, reaction, and continuity fields
YouTube short or TikTok advertical video9:16 frames plus hook, safe-zone, caption, and CTA fields
Fast thumbnailing6-panelmore frames per page while preserving shot metadata
Client pitch4-panel or 6-panelcleaner page with readable notes and production language

The mistake is downloading a dense template because it looks efficient. If the panel boxes are too small, nobody writes useful notes. When you are unsure how much writing room a layout actually gives you, check the preview before printing. All four printable storyboard templates show the full sheet at full size.

Print preflight checklist

Before you send the file to a printer or copy room, check the physical workflow:

CheckWhy it matters
Margin visibilitycrew notes often live near the edge of the sheet
Hole punch sidebinder pages need a clean left margin
Pen contrastgray pencil marks disappear on low-quality copies
Version labelrevised boards need a date or scene range in the header
Table read distancea producer should read the page while standing, not only at a desk

For workshops, print one blank master and one marked-up sample. The blank master keeps the exercise open; the sample shows the level of detail expected without turning this page into a writing lesson. For production binders, group pages by scene and keep spare blanks behind each scene divider so the team can sketch inserts during blocking.

How to print the PDF

Use these settings:

SettingRecommendation
PaperA4
Scale100% or fit to printable area
Orientationportrait
Colorblack-and-white is fine
Copiesprint multiple pages for longer scenes

If you are in the US and printing on Letter paper, use "fit to page." The layout will still work.

How to use the PDF digitally

Open the PDF in a tablet note app or PDF editor. Draw in the panel area and type notes into the blank fields. If the scene changes often, keep the file as a rough planning layer and move the final board into Story2Board later.

What a printable PDF can't do

A PDF won't maintain character consistency by itself. It won't know that a prop moved from one shot to the next. It won't warn you that an eyeline broke. It also won't generate a frame from a script.

That is fine. A template's job is to make planning visible. Once the board needs memory, style control, and revisions, use Story2Board.

Start here

Download the simplest template if you're unsure:

Download the 4-panel storyboard template PDF

Then move to the specialized PDFs when the project asks for them. For a dialogue-heavy scene, use the dialogue storyboard template PDF. For mobile video, use the vertical video storyboard template PDF.

Next, read how to fill out a storyboard template so the page becomes a real shot plan instead of a blank grid.
